Choosing the Most Comfortable Sofa
Your Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Most Comfortable Sofa
Is there anything more satisfying than relaxing into a comfy couch? We think not. Which is why the journey to picking the right one, the most comfortable sofa for you, is so important.
At HSL, we pride ourselves on our knowledge of comfort and we make it our mission to continuously educate ourselves on the subject. Ultimately, we do this so we can develop top-quality products that help people rest better and move better.
1. Make sure it fits you to-a-tee
So without further ado, if you’re looking to upgrade your living room, have a good read of the below features as they’re sure to help you to find the comfiest sofa around.
When looking at how to choose a sofa, some may think that a simple two second sit-down to evaluate how comfy it feels will do the trick. But we know differently.
Paying close attention to how you fit into the sofa is hugely important, in fact there is indeed more of a science behind it. Ensuring a good fit will deliver exceptional comfort and support in terms of posture and health.
We always take people through our 7-Point Seating Assessment™, designed and taught by Occupational Therapist, Julie Jennings Dip COT HCPC. Our assessment uses seven indicators, listed below, to make certain that your body is positioned correctly to offer endless comfort.
- Bottom in the right spot
- The right seat height
- Seat depth
- Getting the right width
- Lumbar support
- Keeping a level head
- Elbows to fingers

2. Choose the right fabric for you
Everyone has a preference when it comes to touch and feel. In terms of fabric, here at HSL we offer a mixture of quality fabric and leather sofas; here are a few things to consider before making your choice.
If you spend your time daydreaming about sinking back into a warm and soft sofa, then a fabric couch may be the one for you. The typically supple texture means you can melt into it instantly and it tends to feel cosy at all times.
There’s quite a few options when it comes to fabric, below are some great ones.
However, if you lean towards a firmer structure then a leather sofa should be on your wish list. It’s great to remember that leather may be easier to clean and over time it can wear in, which can make it even more comfortable!

3. Check the cushioning is top quality
Cushioning is key. What you’re looking for here is a firm cushion that bounces back into its natural shape after you get up from the sofa, but one that moulds naturally to your body as you sit down. You don’t want to feel as though the sofa is resisting you!
This signals that the sofa is likely to last for a long time and has good foundations. Comfort longevity is always the goal!
4. The right size is everything
What ‘getting comfy’ looks like to you, and the layout of your living room, both impact what size of sofa you should be buying.
Firstly, if you know you like to curl up, surrounded by cushions or a furry friend, then a slightly larger sofa is probably more suited to you. Whereas, if you’re a straight back, feet-up-on-a-pouffe kind of person, then you might be more than happy with a slightly smaller type of sofa. We recommend getting a couch that is the perfect size to support your posture, particularly if you need help sitting and rising.
You’ll also want to make sure you measure your house before finalising any decisions. If it turns out your sofa doesn’t fit correctly into your desired room, you’ll have a real mission trying to make it fit, or finding a new position. The latter could completely throw off your room’s decor and, unfortunately, your comfort levels. We don’t want that!
Are we happy to say this? Of course, we know that HSL recommend sitting in the correct way for posture, but there’s no denying that some people curl up on a sofa. We’ve made sure to mention our sizing campaign further down but we’re also happy to amend this if you feel it doesn’t fit with our values.
5. Make sure it’s been crafted with quality
Digging a little deeper into how the sofa was made is always a good idea – if it has been designed well, with comfort at the heart of creation, then you can’t go far wrong.
Try asking about which wood was used for the frame, any details around the foams, webbing and springs, along with fabric origins and maintenance advice. Our Comfort Specialists would be able to answer any of these questions and expand with pleasure, so if you find yourself in a situation where a sales assistant is stumped, it may well reflect on how comfortable the sofa actually is.
