Fairy Garden Ideas: Add Enchantment to your Garden
Every year, we spend our time, money, and energy on our gardens and outdoor spaces. From weeding, mowing the grass to taking care of the flowers and tree, we spend a lot of resources maintaining the space.
We’re focusing on nature and growing our gardening skills, and in the end, we get to enjoy a beautiful garden in a space full of peace and relaxation.
But what do you do when you want to add a sprinkle of magic to your garden?
Whether your city-living or have lots of outdoor space, adding magic boosts our happiness and fills our hearts with joy… and adding a Fairy Garden is the perfect way to display that child-like wonder.
Here’s our Fairy Garden ideas
Your Fairy Garden Location
The first step is deciding the perfect placement for your fairy’s new home. Have a stroll around your garden and choose your favourite spots or somewhere mystical and hidden. If you have a balcony or a small space, find the corner you like to watch the most… just remember, Fairies like to stay hidden!
Get the grandchildren involved and see where they would like to live if they were a fairy. Have the little ones dress up in fairy wings and explore for their favourite spot.
And, if you live near lots of woodland or have a community spot people like to visit, build your Fairy Garden there for more people to enjoy.

Your Fairy Garden Home
As fairies are only little beings, they don’t need a whole lot of room. A little space at the bottom of the garden will do.
If you don’t have a large space or are using a windowsill or balcony, here are a few other suggestions,
- Use a large mug, small pot or teacup
- Use a plant pot, terracotta pot or a glass terrarium
- Use the stump of a tree or build a village amongst large rocks
- Use a large tree or hide under a bush
- Use an old wheelbarrow or broken gardening accessories
- Use hanging baskets to create a sky-high feature
Decorating your Fairy Garden
Creating an enchanting and magical space is the most exciting part of the Fairy Garden build. There are lots of ways to handcraft your own buildings and accessories, as well as planting the perfect plants to bring the magic to life.
If your arts and craft skills aren’t the greatest, take a trip to your local garden centre or discount store and see what outdoor ornaments they have in. You should be able to find everything from a fairy door to gnomes, and they might even have a fairy garden kit.
Plan out how you want your fairy garden to look. If you have a specific theme or items you’d like to add (such as a toadstool or pond), add these in. If the little ones are helping, a plan might not work, but their creativity and imagination will fill in any space.
Here are a few Fairy Garden decorating ideas,
- Gnomes or fairy figure ornaments
- White picket fence or lollipop fence
- Decorative stone, pebble or wooden disc foot paths
- Fairy door or houses
- A bridge over water or pond
- Ladders or steps (if the garden is on different tiers)
- A welcome sign or post box
- A swing (either free-standing or hung from a small branch)
- A drinking well
- Decorative bunting, fairy lights or tea candles
- Toadstools and other mushrooms

Storybook or Fairy Tale
Where all the wonder and magic started, be inspired by your favourite storybook and fairy tale worlds. Whether in the form a witches and wizards, to more classic tales, such as little red riding hood or Princess and the frog.
Windowsill or coffee table terrariums
For those keeping their garden indoors, design your fairy home around a windowsill or on the coffee table in a terrarium as a focal point.
Fairy Woodlands
Collect as many wonderful fairy ornaments as you can and head to the woods. Start a fairy garden for the whole community to enjoy.
Coastal beach
If you want to enjoy those fond memories of your seaside holidays, take your fairy garden in another direction, with sand, rocks and shells.
Seasonal
If you have a favourite time of year, such as Christmas or Halloween, create a seasonal fairy garden. You could also change the way your year-round fairy garden looks and add seasonal decorations so the fairies can celebrate too.
