What Makes Quality Living Room Furniture: A Guide
The living room is the heart of the home. Whether you use it as the space to unwind, converse with the family, or binge your favourite TV shows, this central space is where most people spend their time relaxing. What better way to relax than with comfortable furniture?
Everyone’s needs are different, and the way we utilise our living room space is personal. But one thing’s for certain, everyone appreciates comfortable, aesthetically pleasing furniture. So, whether you enjoy settling into an armchair, putting your feet up with a recliner or cuddling up with the whole family on the sofa, those comfortable moments can be the most meaningful.
Here at HSL, we have been crafting quality, feel good furniture since 1968. Every piece of furniture from our chairs, sofas to the accessories are designed around you, for you. And, if our 55+ years of expertise isn’t enough, read on to find out what makes our furniture truly high‑quality.
What makes luxury furniture, luxury?
Luxury furniture can be defined by high-end materials, artistic designs, and often with a price tag reflecting the craftsmanship. It goes beyond functionality to provide ultimate comfort, durability and timeless style.
Furniture made to last, like ours, is usually handcrafted by experts who are passing their skills down to the next generation. They’re made with high‑quality materials, such as our patented wooden knuckles, and provide more than just comfort thanks to independent expertise. So, luxury furniture does more than just look good but benefits your wellbeing too.
Comfort and functionality
Every HSL chair is designed to support your whole body, from your head, hips, feet, to your posture. When choosing your HSL chair, our friendly Comfort Specialists will take you through a free exclusive chair fitting, where you’ll be seated in the correct sized chair depending on your needs.
Our chairs include high backs with a variety of padded back designs depending on what you need to feel comfortable. On top of this, each product design is ergonomically crafted with leading technology. So, if you enjoy putting your feet up with a recliner, need a little extra help getting up with a riser recliner or want a snuggle seat to cosy up on - comfort and functionality is our passion.
Durability and longevity
When buying furniture for your living room you want it to last as long as possible and survive the wear of everyday life. At HSL we thrive on building furniture with traditional British values using only the finest materials. Every piece and every design is handcrafted to stand the test of time, that’s why all our frames have a 25-year guarantee.
Working closely with our third-party partnerships. We source high-quality materials, from responsibly sourced British wool used in our mattresses to British‑grown ash wood used in our ercol collaboration. On top of this, we work with designer brands, including Morris & Co., Moon and Sanderson, so you can enjoy quality fabrics with signature patterns.
Aesthetic appeal and design
Quality furniture elevates a living room into a luxurious and practical space. By choosing the style, fabric or leather, the aesthetics of your furniture transforms the space into the forefront of luxury, splashed with your own personality. At HSL, our furniture stays timeless, so when trends change, your furniture will continue to complement your home and any design changes.
Choose from a wealth of fabrics and leathers to suit your style, including third‑party brands such as Morris & Co., Sanderson, and Moon. Elevate your space with natural materials, like wood, to make your living room look even more inviting. Check out our ercol | HSL collaboration for traditional craftsmanship and truly unique pieces.
Trusted by Experts
Not every piece of luxury furniture is approved by experts, but ours are. We work closely with our independent Occupational Therapist, Julie Jennings Dip COT HCPC, a respected member of the British Association of Occupational Therapists. Julie has provided advice across all levels of the business and approves of all our furniture designs. Between her and her support team, all our HSL Comfort Specialists are trained to understand good posture, correct seating position and safe transfer when getting in and out of your chair.

On top of working with leading experts, we’re proud to have worked with the University of Leeds to research the physiological impacts of sitting in a HSL chair that is correctly sized to you. Dr Andrea Utley, a Reader in Motor Control and Learning in the School of Biomedical Sciences, used cutting-edge technology and the research found that sitting in a correctly sized chair:
- Reduces your blood pressure by 10%
- Reduces your heart rate by 6%
- Increases tissue oxygenation by more than 2%
