How to Freshen Up your HSL Furniture for the New Year
The New Year is the perfect time of year to give our homes a refresh, a little like the freshen up before the spring clean. Whether you declutter the shelves and cupboards to make room for new ingredients, donate old trinkets to make room for new Christmas gifts, or get a deep clean in, the New Year promotes bringing in abundance and new opportunity.
Celebrate 2026 with the things that bring comfort and joy to your home, like your HSL furniture. Designed with expert craftsmanship for Clever Comfort, every HSL chair and sofa is built to last through every meaningful moment. With a little care and attention, these pieces can look and feel as inviting as the day you chose them, ready to support you through another year of comfort and style.
Your HSL furniture will last a lifetime, which is why every HSL Chair comes with a 25-year guarantee. Within those years your furniture can experience a lot, with the little daily spills from your food and brews to those marks that come with life milestones, including the grandchildren and pets adding their own marks and fingerprints.
When you first purchased your HSL chair, you might have been introduced to the Guardsman Protection Plan for more professional care. But what can you do for the everyday wear and tear?
Fabric
Over time light dirt and dust will increase wear on the fabric, if you eat at your chair or have the grandkids over, you may also notice a lot more crumbs in the seams and down the sides of the seat cushions. We recommend giving your HSL a hoover, making your way over the fabric and between the nooks and crannies. Do this at least once a month and brush your furniture down with a soft brush (a hard or metallic brush can damage the fabric fibres).
We do not recommend wet cleaning as this can cause the colours to ‘bleed’, could damage the cushioning and leave permanent marks.
Leather
Being a natural material means that each leather piece can display different marks, shades and characteristics. Over time your leather furniture will hold your family’s history, from creases to the leather being stretched in a natural effect called ‘leather pooling’. Hoover your leather furniture and polish with a soft, clean cloth.
For an overdue refresh, apply a neutral leather cream to restore the shine of the leather. We do not recommend using detergents, wet wipes, saddle soap, wax or spray polish, or direct heat to dry your furniture.
Removable Seat Cushions
If your seat cushions are removeable, give them a good plump and reverse them, making sure that if the cushion has a zipper, it sits at the back of the chair.
Fixed Seat Cushions
If your chair has fixed seat cushions you might notice that the cushioning becomes unaligned. To dress the cushion, simply use your hands to push the seat cushion towards the back of the chair and smooth the fabric to each side of the seat.
As you’re not able to plump the cushions, use your hands to gently beat the foam to recover and remove any slight indentations that may have appeared in the cushion after prolonged periods of use.
Back Cushions
HSL chair and sofa backs are filled with a soft-fibre filling to give that clever comfort and ergonomic support. Over time these fillings can flatten with use and will require some plumping. Gently beat the cushion to redistribute the filling and give life back to your chair. If you have a back cushion that is two or three-tiered, plumping your cushions daily will prolong comfort and support.
Once you’ve given your HSL furniture the care it needs, refresh the look with some new scatter cushions and a throw to match the season. Be inspired and browse our range of accessories, from our range of ottomans, footstools to arm covers and more.
For general care, try these tips and tricks:
- Avoid positioning your furniture in direct sunlight or right next to the radiator, this prevents the fabric from wearing and the colour from fading.
- Avoid contact with cosmetic products, such as hair gels, sprays, body creams and moisturisers. These will remove and damage the protective topcoat and discolour the fabric or leather.
- Avoid contact with sharp objects, such as belts, buckles and zips, as these can damage the fabric or leather.
- If you have a chair or sofa in a lighter shade material, don’t leave newspapers or items with dark dyes in them, such as denim, as the ink can migrate and cause discolouration.
- If you allow pets on your furniture, daily maintenance will avoid wear and tear from sharp claws, natural oils from their fur.
Giving your HSL furniture a little attention now means you’ll enjoy its comfort and beauty for many years to come. The New Year is all about fresh starts, so why not start with the pieces that make your home feel welcoming? With regular care and a few simple touches, your chair or sofa will look and feel as good as new, ready for every moment life brings.
