We’re Celebrating the First Made in UK Day on 9 March 2021
At HSL, we have been proud manufacturers of high quality, UK made furniture for over 50 years, and as the appetite to shop locally and support local businesses grows, we’re delighted to be taking part in the first-ever Made in UK Day on Tuesday 9 March 2021.
What is Made in UK Day?
The Made in UK Day campaign has been created by Make it British to celebrate their 10 year anniversary. Started as a blog by ex-retail buyer Kate Hills to champion all the wonderful products that are made in the UK, the Make it British website has now been visited by more than 6.5 million people looking to buy UK-made products and search for UK manufacturers. This year alone has seen a 68% increase in enquiries since the UK left the EU’s single market and customs union.
UK manufacturing is currently worth £192 billion to the UK economy and employs 2.7 million people. More than 65 million people live in the UK and if everyone bought just one item made in the UK worth £20 on Made in UK Day it would be worth an incredible £1.3 billion.
Why are HSL getting involved?
Here at HSL, we make our chairs, sofas and beds right here in West Yorkshire. For over 50 years, we have handcrafted quality furniture in the UK, bringing true comfort to thousands of happy customers.
We’re very proud of our roots, starting in 1968 in the small West Yorkshire mill town of Dewsbury. It’s a place built on hard work and determination; two excellent qualities that we believe are at the very heart of our thriving business.
We wanted to take part in Made in UK Day this year because, by purchasing from UK-made businesses like us, you are helping to:
Lower your carbon footprint
Buying products made closer to home means you can significantly reduce the number of miles something has travelled. In turn, this reduces its carbon footprint.
UK-made products are often made in much smaller quantities, too. Each of the chairs, sofas and beds at HSL are made to order, discouraging waste within the supply chain.
The environment is a subject of particular importance to us. As part of HSL’s long-term vision, our aim as a respected and trusted brand is to demonstrate a solid commitment to environmental sustainability. We have continued to advance our activity in reducing CO2 emissions in our factory, stores and head office, as well as the transport of our furniture. We also recently planted over 5,000 trees near each of our UK Comfort Stores, taking another step forward in our environmental responsibility.
Save essential skills
Manufacturing requires skill. Not everyone suits working in a service-based industry. By purchasing a product that is made in the UK you are helping to save skills within local communities. Skills that would otherwise be lost.
Here at HSL, we don’t just make chairs, sofas and beds. We handcraft well-built, beautifully upholstered comfort furniture and have a well-earned reputation for quality and service. Our skilled craftsmen & women have decades of experience behind them and exacting standards that they are not prepared to compromise.
Create job opportunities
2.7 million people work within manufacturing in the United Kingdom. When you buy a product that is made in the UK you are directly contributing to keeping someone in employment.
We’re proud to say that we have a network of over 400 colleagues nationwide. We’re not just employers and employees at HSL, we’re a family.
Promote UK craftsmanship
When you buy a product that is made in the UK you are helping to preserve craftsmanship that has been passed down through generations.
At HSL, we are a family run business and as such, many of our colleagues are family members – one generation teaching the next about the skills required to produce high quality furniture.
Boost local economies
Buying locally-made products directly contributes to your local economy. Spend your money wisely and help contribute directly towards the area in which you live.
HSL has over 50 stores across the UK. Each of these are supporting local economies in both the big cities like Glasgow, Belfast, Birmingham and Cardiff, but also the small, beautiful towns and villages like Henley in Arden, Shrewsbury and St Leonards on Sea. We hire local people and bring a friendly, local feel to each one of our Comfort Stores. A visit to a store, and a chat with our Comfort Specialists is like a trip to another home from home.
