Six of the Best Chairs for Arthritis Sufferers

Unfortunately, arthritis affects millions of people worldwide in a variety of different ways. If you’re searching for the best chairs for arthritis sufferers – either because you are suffering from it yourself or know someone who is – HSL is here to help.

Having arthritis can cause everyday activities such as sitting and relaxing to become difficult and uncomfortable. One way to overcome this is to invest in correctly fitted mobility furniture – but what are the best chairs for arthritis? We’re here to tell you….

In this guide, we’ll cover questions ranging from ‘what is arthritis?’ to ‘what can be done for arthritis in the back?’ and ‘what are the most comfortable chairs for arthritis sufferers?’.

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is a disease where one or more of the joints are inflamed. The most common types are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. However, ‘arthritis’ is a term that is used to describe a broad range of conditions causing pain, swelling and stiffness in the joints. Whilst most associated with older people, it can affect all ages, genders and races.

What does arthritis feel like & what causes arthritis?

Arthritis can be separated into two main types – inflammatory (or rheumatoid) and mechanical (or osteoarthritis). Pain involving the joints (knees, hips, wrists) and joint swelling are both indicators of arthritis. This is a major reason why comfortable chairs for arthritis suffers are so important – as an uncomfortable chair will make the pain you already have, worse.

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. It involves wear-and-tear damage to a joint’s cartilage, which results in bone grinding directly on bone. This consequently causes pain and restricted movement. It can occur over many years and can be worsened by joint injury and infection.

Rheumatoid arthritis is where the body’s immune system attacks the lining of the joint capsule, which then becomes inflamed and swollen. It’s a long-term condition that causes pain, swelling and stiffness in the joint, and periods of time where the symptoms become worse are known as ‘flare-ups’ or ‘flares’. Unlike osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis affects the lining of the joints, causing a painful swelling that can eventually result in bone erosion and joint deformity.

What helps arthritis?

Gentle daily exercise is recommended as it encourages the joints to move. It’s also important to sit up straight to keep the body aligned when resting – which is why investing in specific chairs for arthritis sufferers is so helpful. Having arthritis can make you feel stiff and achy, so opting for one of our specially designed arthritis-friendly chairs can make a world of difference.

The Carnaby Armchair

When it comes to chairs for arthritis, it’s important to consider the seat and armrests. You’ll want to opt for a firm seat base and good armrests with plenty of handgrip and padding for support.

The Carnaby armchair is an excellent choice with its reinforced arms and seat padding, which makes it easy to rise from the chair. Having lower armrests is also beneficial for arthritis sufferers as it will prevent you from hunching your shoulders. Additionally, the Carnaby armchair’s armrests don’t stick out too far, so the chair won’t tip up when you put your weight on it.
