The importance of good seated posture cannot be overestimated. Over time, poor posture can lead to life-style issues such as digestive problems. Slumped or poor posture, can impair the blood flow around the body which in turn can affect the digestive system.
The key to understanding why our CleverComfort™ designed furniture can help you with your digestion is to remember that it aids in maintaining good seated posture.
One of the effects of bad posture is that your stomach may become compressed, causing stomach pains and digestive difficulties. Sitting in a slumped position causes the tip of the breastbone to press down into the general area where the food pipe joins the stomach. This affects the efficiency of the valve-like structure between them and may contribute to backflow or reflux of stomach acid. The upward flow of acid can make the inside of the food pipe sore and tender, and the pressure and irritation can cause a spasm of the junction which is called “oesophageal achalasia”. The tip of the breastbone also stabs into a bundle of nerves (called the “solar plexus”) which controls many abdominal functions.
Another by-product of a “slumped” posture, or forward leaning, is that it causes the lower ribs to press downwards on the colon (your long tubular structure that carries food residue from the stomach to the rectum). A section of that tube goes up the left side of the abdomen, across the top of it, and down the right side. When slouched in a chair, your lower ribs tend to press on the bends on each side. This contributes to irregularity, constipation, and spasms of the colon, and to blockages of the appendix, potentially leading to appendicitis.
Finally, if you find yourself waking up 2-3 times per night because of a bitter burning taste in your mouth, also known as acid reflux, then you may benefit from owning an adjustable bed. The same is true if you suffer from belching after meals, especially when it is some time after you’ve finished eating. As little as a 6 inch incline can make all the difference when it comes to keeping your stomach acid where it is supposed to be. This small incline eliminates the stress that is placed on the throat and promotes a better night’s sleep, without having to use heavy antacids or protein pump reducers that can diminish the quality of your sleep.
